AmeriCorps VISTAs Bring Sustainability and Capacity Building to Local Communities
AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service of America (VISTA) is a national service program empowering local community members to strengthen long-term solutions to poverty. During a full-year term, VISTAs serve alongside host site organizations where they establish sustainable processes, workflows, and systems that leave a lasting imprint on the communities they support.
Capacity Building
One key distinction of the VISTA program is that members do not provide direct service, such as handing out food or building homes. Instead, VISTAs expand the capacity of organizations by improving systems, processes, and infrastructure behind these efforts. Understanding this unique role helps clarify the kind of impact VISTAs have across the state.
In Texas, AmeriCorps VISTAs serve across a wide range of sectors, including homelessness, food insecurity, education, public health and more. The Baylor Hunger Collaborative hosts a food-insecurity focused AmeriCorps VISTA program with members serving in rural and mixed rural-urban communities like Bastrop or Johnson counties, or urban communities throughout Austin and Dallas. These VISTAs have made a significant impact on their host sites by enhancing social media presence, convening local stakeholders through Hunger-Free Coalitions, and securing grant funding to launch new projects.
VISTA Spotlight
Mikayla Ernst served with Tackle Hunger, a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas focusing on mobilizing communities to address food insecurity. During her time with Tackle Hunger, Mikayla helped fulfill their mission by supporting food charities nationwide. In particular, she managed the Tackle Hunger Map, a nationwide map of food charities, and assisted in fundraising initiatives which utilize the map. Recently, she assisted a TV station based in San Francisco, California in holding a fundraising day for all food charities in the area. This large-scale fundraising initiative led to over $70,000 in donations to over 250 charities across the TV station’s viewing area. This effort not only helped charities by providing them with monetary support but also connected them directly with Tackle Hunger and the opportunity for future collaborations.
My favorite part about serving in this position is being able to help charities across the country through my work at Tackle Hunger!"
AmeriCorps VISTAs are invaluable members of the communities they serve, bringing fresh perspective, dedicated time, and deep commitment to their host sites. Their efforts allow organizations to pursue projects and initiatives they may not otherwise have the capacity to take on.
